The dramatic rescue operation to evacuate the 13-year-old from the 18-meter-deep cave started on Monday morning.  While the men of Greek Search and Rescue Units (EMAK) did their utmost to evacuate the boy,  the narrow spout of the cave situated in Attikon Park (Attikon Alsos) in Polygono suburb of Athens, made the rescue operation very difficult.

One rescue effort to bring the boy up to the surface with the help of a stretcher at 12:30 failed.

Media reported that the boy was injured in the foot. His father was reportedly trying to encourage the school student who communicated with the rescue team.

According to Greek media, 13-year-old Thodoris fell in the cave on the way to school on Monday morning. It has been claimed that his bag fell in the cave and the boy fell inside while it was trying to recover it.

I must stress here that the EMAK is one of the best organized institution we have here in Greece 🙂

PS I wonder what the boy was doing up there on the rocks. A short cut to school?
