Several prison guards are surrounding convict Ilya Kareli. The convict is dressed and has a bruise on his eye. He is able to walk. The prison guards push him into a room. Two and a half hours later, they drag the almost naked Kareli through the same corridor and throw him in a cell. The convict is unable to stand on his feet. A couple of hours later, he is dead.
Online edition of To Vima newspaper exclusively obtained and uploaded seven screen shots taken from the security camera, the closed circuit of Nigrita prison. The pictures are not only revealing about the prison guards’ behavior that most likely caused the death of Kareli.

The pictures are also shocking about the conditions in Greece’s penitentiary institution where guards take the law in their hands and take revenge for the death of their colleague, murdered by Kareli.
“A Greek Abu Ghraib has been revealed ” To Vima reporter comments on the daily’s website and adds:
“The prison guards push Kareli at 3.45 pm on March 27th in the reception room and 2 hours and 45 minutes later he is been dragged almost naked and abused into the cell where he dies shortly after.
Among the crowd is also the director of Nigrita prison to see.
It was these footage from the security camera that led Greek Police officials investigating Kareli’s death to seek the perpetrators.” (To Vima)
Fifteen prison guards in total are suspect to have taken part in Kareli’s torture. Six of them have been imprisoned after given testimonies, the testimonies of another seven is due in the next few hours.

Ilya Kareli of Albanian origin was serving a 20-year prison sentence in Malandrino prison for attempted murder, robbery, drug violations, unlawful entry and forgery.
On March 25th, Kareli stabbed prison guard Giorgos Tsironis, 46, with a sharp tool he had made from a part of a door frame. Tsironis died immediately. Kareli told the prosecutor, he attacked Tsironis, “because he was refused leave to see his frail mother.”
