UNICEF’s social experiment: People treat lost poor children differently than rich ones (video)

A social experiment: Would you stop if you saw a little girl alone on the street? apparently you would but it would depend much on the clothes the little wear would wear and her general appearance: clean and neatly, or dirty and not neatly.

UNICEF made a powerful local experiment by letting a 6-year-old girl appear in both outfits and randomly approach people. UNIFEC filmed people’s reactions and the results are heartbreaking.

In the experiment, 6-year-old actor Anano is dressed nicely, and then not-so-nicely.

Anano dressed nicely: Strangers approached Anano to ask her questions or offer her help.

Anano dressed in dirty, worn clothes: No adult came up to her or tried to help her.

Then the experiment team moved into a restaurant and tried the same scenario: Well-dressed Anano was offered money and help. But badly-dressed Anano faced this:

The filming on the streets and in restaurant took place reportedly in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The experiment was interrupted when Anano became upset about people’s prejudice.

The video was released on June 28th is part of UNICEF’s For Every Child campaign and became viral.

UNICEF made the video to bring attention to what they call “a vicious cycle of disadvantage.”

“Around the world, millions of children are denied these rights and deprived of what they need to grow up healthy and strong — because of their place of birth; because of their race, ethnicity or gender; or —because they have a disability or live in poverty,” their 2016 State of the World’s children report reads. UNICEF finds that 69 million children under the age of 5 will die by 2030, unless we work toward ending extreme poverty.

PS of course, this doesn’t apply only in Georgia. Make the experiment yourself as adult and go into a multi store once dressed fine, once dressed in poorly looking mismatch preferably from Laiki (the open market).
