Ex former Minister, a physician, and lawmaker of conservative New Democracy claimed that homosexuality is a contagious disease.
In an interview to Parapolitika web TV, Gerasimos Giakkoumatos, 67, claimed that “in medical terms homosexuals appear in two forms: they have acquired it or they were born like this.”
He said he had many friends who were gay, he wouldn’t care about sexual behavior and that he was not homophobic.
“To understand the issue medically, there are two kinds of homosexuals: those who have acquired it and those who were born with it.”
Giakoumatos argumentation was more or less that television should not show homosexual behavior because children can get infected.
“If you watch TV, all the examples, 90% are homosexual. When the child sees whatever is being broadcast, eh.. it gets infected. It’s an infectious disease,” Giakoumatos said.
A little later, the leader New Democracy called on Giakoumatos to apologize for his homophobic statements.
PS oh dear, I hope scientists will discover some vaccine and antibiotics or antivirus drugs. Also some high-tech TV screens to protect children from getting the disease if it is airborne 😛
If this pathetic and ignorant “understanding” of human behaviour is in any way representative of Greek doctors, it would suggest keeping away from them. Such non-scientific bigotry and arrogance is in keeping with leeches and bleeding patients to death in order to “cure” them.

Spreading “infectious diseases” via the airwaves? Who could have thought? I think around 7% of populations are homosexual. And that hasn’t changed really. That they are now more visible and accepted (hopefully) is due the fact that they are now more free to come out of the closet. People are born that way although latest research published in Nature I think suggests that human sexuality is a flux. It is all in the structure of brain and the chemical/hormonal make up of somebody.
