A 22-year-old woman with Belgian citizenship was arrested on suspicion of membership in a terror group. The woman was arrested late Friday night while on a passenger ferry sailing from Italy to Greece, en route Bari-Corfu-Igoumenitsa. The arrest followed a Europol warrant on charges of extremism. The Greek Coast Guard was tipped off by Italian authorities.
The woman was arrested following an international warrant against her for membership in a terror group.
Late Friday afternoon, Italian authorities informed their Greek colleagues that the suspected woman had left Italy for Greece on the Super Fast ferry heading to Igoumenitsa via the island of Corfu.
A joint operation between the Coast Guard and the law enforcement of Corfu was launched, the woman was located on the ship and was arrested by members of the Coast Guard.
According to Athens News Agency, the woman is Belgian citizen of Moroccan descent.
The international arrest warrant has been issued by Belgium for participation in a terrorist group.
The woman was expected to be taken to prosecutor on Saturday. Deportation procedures are to be launched.
No further details about the woman’s identity and links to terror organization have been released.
