Novartis: Police raids home of close associate of New Democracy deputy leader

Police raided the house of a close associate of New Democracy Vice-President Adonis Georgiadis on Saturday. The raid was part of the ongoing investigation into the Novartis bribery case.

Citing sources, athensnewsagency notes that the raid was ordered by the corruption prosecutor who is handling the case and who will assess any findings. No further information was immediately available on the development.

The scandal is shaking the political landscape in Greece, with those whose names have been allegedly involved due to witnesses testimonies to claim that the whole issue has been a plot staged by ruling SYRIZA.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is said to support the establishment of a parliamentary investigation on the case after corruption prosecutors and the prosecutor of Supreme Court submitted the first part of the findings into the Palriament.

Government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said Tsipras will propose an ad hoc parliamentary preliminary investigation committee to examine the involvement of all political persons named in the Novartis case file.

Novartis side effect: Meanwhile, it seems that the scandal does not leave unharmed also the political parties. New Democracy leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, expelled Evaggelos Antonaros from the party late Saturday night, after the latter sharply attacked ND deputy leader Georgiadis with a post on social media. Antonaros’s criticism was addressing the many appearances on media of the deputy ND leader.

Antonaros was government spokesman during the premiership of Kostas Karamanlis and a close associate to the former prime minister.
