Pregnant Bulgarian national missing in Crete, her Greek partner committed suicide

A 37-year-old Bulgarian woman has been missing since May 2nd 2018 on the Greek island of Crete. For nearly seven years, Desislava Ilieva had a relationship with a local man who was found hanged in the basement of his family home four days after she went missing.

The woman went missing at Wednesday noon from Rethymnon where she was living and working at a restaurant.

Before she went missing, she had told her mother and her friends on the phone that she was going to lunch with her partner to a restaurant in the ‘forest’ area that was later identified as the palm forest of Prevelis.

A Silver Alert was issued: Ilieva Desislava is 1,60 m high and has brown eyes. SOS phone number for information is  <1065> free of charge.

The 45-year-old man in question was found hanged four days after Desislava’s disappearance. The Greek authorities are already conducting a search operation.

According to Ilieva’s friends, the man did not want the child and he was married. Citing suggestions by Desivlava’s friends,  Bulgarian media write “the Greek man may have killed Desislava after a scandal and then committed suicide.”

Speaking to private TV magazine Fos Sto Tounel that deals with missing persons and unresolved criminal cases, the woman’s friends said when they asked the man right after Wednesday where Desisvlava was, he told them she had gone to Germany.

The man had claimed the same thing to the missing woman’s mother when she called him from Bulgaria where she lives.

According to FsT, authorities initially did not connect the two cases, that is the missing of the woman and the partner’s suicide, together.

Police authorities focus their investigation in the broader area of Kerames village by Agios Vasilios, in the south of Rethymnon Prefecture, as a witness said to have seen the man’s car in the area.

Police reportedly investigates through air lines whether the woman traveled abroad and hopes lifting the privacy of her mobile to find some answers.
