Earthquake 5.5R strikes off Pylos, SW Peloponnese

A powerful earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale stroke in the sea area off Pylos in South-West Peloponnese at 08:15 on Monday morning, June 25, 2018. The epicenter is located  34 km South-West of Pylos, 28km SW of Methoni 75 km West of Kalamata and 170 km South of Patras. According to initial measuring the stroke was 5.8 R but national and international seismologic institutes revised it to lower, between 5.2 and 5.4 and 5.5 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake occurred in a depth of 10 km.

Short after the earthquake, two aftershocks of 3.4R and 2.4 R occurred, while minor earthquakes occurred prior to the 5.4 R.

The tremor was felt almost in the whole of Peloponnese and on the southern Ionian islands, particularly on Zakynthos.

According to eyewitnesses the tremor lasted about 20 seconds.

“It had a long duration, yet the area often produces earthquakes,” Pylos mayor, Dimitirs Kafantaris, told media adding Fire Service and Police is patrolling the area to check if human injuries or material damages.

At 9:30 a.m. Kafantaris told state broadcaster ERT TV that no damages or injuries were recorded so far.

According to ERT, the earthquake was 5.5 Richter.
