Powerful winds sweep away lorries in West Greece (video,pictrs)

Powerful winds blowing with intensity of 9 Beaufort have swept away trucks from the roads in Western Greece on Thursday.

In the first incident, strong winds lifted the empty flatbed of the truck and “pinned’ it on a signboard of the Rio-Antirio bridge in south-west Greece.

Traffic on the lane to Patras was interrupted, police and Fire Service rushed to the bridge to safely remove the truck from the area.

The lane to Ioannina was opened for both traffic directions. by afternoon, recovery works are continuing.

The Rio-Antirio Bridge management has urged motorists and especially truck drivers to secure their loads.

Due to the wind intensity of up to 9 Beaufort, also the sea traffic between Rio and Antirio was interrupted.

The second incident affected also a lorry on the road Parama-Kranoula by Ioannina in Epirus.

Powerful winds reportedly forced the lorry out of the road and into a field. The lorry was empty and has Albanian license plates. The driver was slightly injured and transferred to the hospital.

Local media warn of continuous tree falls in the area due to the wind intensity.

The sea traffic between the city of Ioannina and the island in the Lake of the same name has been halted.

A barometric low is sweeping across the country with rainfalls, storms, hail, snow, temperature drop and winds blowing with intensity of up to 10 Beaufort. The weather forecast in Greece until March 31, 2019.
