Hikers tragedy: Singapore couple, Greek instructor die in Xylokastro gorge

A couple from Singapore and a Greek 40-year-old instructor assistant found a tragic death in Agios Loukas gorge in Xylokastro on Saturday.  Another Greek, the chief instructor was found alive but injured by rescue teams on Sunday.

The four hikers attempted to descent the gorge of Agios Loukas on Saturday when for so far unknown reasons the tragedy occurred.

It was the wife of one of the instructors who alerted Greek authorities after she had no contact to her husband for several hours.

Fire Service and rescue teams launched an operation on Saturday afternoon in order to locate the missing hikers.

Short before darkness set in, the rescue teams located the man from Singapore in a difficult to access area of the gorge and recovered his body.

Operation continued to locate the remaining three hikers.

According to local media, late on Saturday night, the rescue teams were hearing “voices coming from somewhere in the gorge.” Efforts to reach the spot were difficult due to darkness and the geo-morphology.

The Search and Rescue operation was reportedly resumed early Sunday morning.

By the first daylight, the rescue teams were confronted with a macabre scene: two dead hikers and the injured instructor.
