Justice for Tyrell Matthews Burton: Cretan court convicts two Britons

A court on the island of Crete found two 25-year-old Britons as guilty of charges of direct and simple complicity for the murder of Tyrell Matthews Burton. The 19-year-old was stabbed to death while on vacation in Malia in 2013.

More than six years after the murder, judges and jury found that the two Britons are guilty of complicity.

Neither of them appeared in court and one was not even legally represented.

He was sentenced to 10 years for direct complicity while his co-defendant was sentenced to seven years for simple complicity.

For both, appeals have no suspensive force (for the most part) and so they should be sent to prison.

The 24-year-old alleged killer is out of jail, and although sentenced to 15 years. The British Justice declined the Greek authorities’ request for extradition. The alleged murderer had said  that his conviction on appeal in March 2018 went ahead without his knowledge.

The conviction of the two young Britons brought relief to the victim’s mother, who was present in court, reports local media cretalive.

The family’s lawyer, Yiannis Constantoudakis, said he was pleased, stressing that the court recognized the crucial role that the defendants played in the victim’s unjust killing.

They are now awaiting the next stages and for the issue of European arrest warrants.

Tyrell was killed in the morning of July 23, 2013, in Malia. According to the case file, two different groups brawl in a local bar. They exchanged derogatory comments, then they went out on the street where they continued the brawl.

The alleged murderer stabbed twice the victim with a knife. The first stab hit the lung and the heart, while the second one was not that serious. According to the forensic report, the victim was beaten before the knife stabbed him to death.
