Coronavirus: Greece restricts road, sea-, air-traffic to 4 countries

Greece is deepening the lockdown to contain spread of coronavirus and decided to halt air- and sea traffic to European countries with high number of infections like Italy and Spain.

The country also closes its borders to its northern neighbors Albania and North Macedonia, after these two countries closed their borders to Greece on Saturday.

During a meeting attended by several ministers, high-ranking government officials and chaired by prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Sunday it has been decided to:

Suspend road, sea and air-traffic to Albania and North Macedonia. Excepted is the transport of goods and the netry of persons with Greek nationality or residents in Greece.

Suspend passengers transport to and from Italy. The transport of good continues. The government decided to cancel all flight to/from Italy on Saturday.

Suspend flights to/from Spain.

Forbid cruise ships and sailboats to dock at Greek ports.

At the same time, the country has made efforts with foreign embassies to obtain masks in the coming days and thus from countries that have reserves.

In addition, the fine of 5,000 euros is set for those violating the coronavirus measures and “demonstrate anti-social behavior.” The fine is additional to other legal consequences like imprisonment starting from 3 years up to life sentence.

The government has reportedly also decided that all New Democracy lawmakers close their offices.
