An earthquake measuring 4.8 on Richter scale hit the island of Crete short after noon on Saturday, The epicenter was 8 km East of Sitia in the East of the island and was particularity felt also in Agios Nikolaos but in Heraklio as well.
The focal depth was 20.5 kilometers.
Two smaller tremors followed, this time in the maritime area in the south of the prefecture.
The first tremor with 2.8R occurred ten minutes after the earthquake, and the second with 3.5R just three minutes later.
There are no reports about injuries or material damage, so far.
The Director of the Greek Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization Efthimios Lekkas said that seismologists closely monitor the phenomenon.
