Author, journalist, former member of the Greek Parliament and activist Periklis Korovesis passed away at the age of 79. He was a symbol of resistance against the military junta. He became famous worldwide with his first book The Method: A Personal Account of the Tortures in Greece (Anthropofylakes in Greek 1969), a personal account of the tortures that he experienced at the police headquarters in Athens during the colonels’ junta.
Anthropofylakes has been translated into several languages.
His personal story was a significant testimony for Amnesty International and the Council of Europe in order to file charges against the regime of the colonels for the appalling treatment of political prisoners.
Korovesis was an elected Member of Parliament with left-wing SYRIZA in the 2007 Greek legislative election.
He was an advocate of human rights, immigrants, environmental issues and the Greek diaspora.
next to his books, he wrote also theater plays and a couple of children books.
Periklis Korovesis was hospitalized in the last couple of days in Athens. He left Saturday morning, the day his columns used to appear in daily efimerida ton syntakton.
