US calls on Turkey to refrain from creating tension in Evros

US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Palmer has said that he has been working systematically to reduce tensions in Greek-Turkish relations.

During an online event organized by the German Marshall Fund, Palmer assured that Washington is in constant dialogue with Athens and Ankara with the aim of mitigating the various points of friction through diplomatic means and not evolving into possible crises.

“There are challenges with overflights by Turkish aircraft, which have been highlighted by the Greek government. Again, we work with our allies and partners to promote dialogue, to promote responsible management of disputed sectors, and to mitigate friction points before they turn into crises. This is not a new issue. This is something we have been working on for many years and some of these points of friction have been around for a long time, “he said.

Regarding the events in Evros, Palmer recalled his visit to Alexandroupolis in March, saying that he had the opportunity to talk about the pressure exerted on the Greek-Turkish border, which is Turkey’s border with the EU.

“I encourage Turkey to work to reduce these tensions. Since then, we have seen the border tensions de-escalate,” he said.
