Greece’s iconic singer Haris Alexiou bids farewell to singing

Greece’s iconic singer Haris Alexiou announced that she will stop performing live as well as doing recordings because her voice does not allow her to do so. In a confession that shocked her fans in and outside Greece and her colleagues, Alexiou bids farewell to singing as her “voice does not listens to me anymore.”

Speaking to 2. Program of broadcaster ERA, one of Greece’s greatest performers said that her decision was “difficult and a very serious one.” She added that she does not do anything if not well.

“I’m completely out of singing. I can’t sing like I used to and I don’t agree to keep doing that if I can’t do it well. My voice doesn’t go anymore, my voice no longer “listens” to me and I said it’s better to stop,” she said.

She said that she took her final decision during a performance for famous composer Stavros Xarhakos.

“I said to myself, you don’t deserve this. It wasn’t easy and of course, I mourned,” she told ERA.

“I don’t write songs anymore. When I write, I want to sing it, so what should I write now?” Alexiou said.

Haroula – Little Haris -, as she is known in Greece – Alexiou is considered one of the most popular singers in the country and has been commercially successful since the 1970s.

Alexiou has a particular audience in Turkey, where her name was given to a streets in Gaziemir in Izmir province. Her grandmother’s family had to migrate from Sevdikoy, Izmir, to Greece after the Asia Minor Tragedy.

    So sad to hear, but she has to do what’s best for her. I had the privilege to see her perform a couple of times in Toronto.
