Coronavirus Greece: Infections rise to 3148, deaths to 185; restrictions & night curfew for community

Greece’s health authorities announced on Tuesday evening 15 new coronavirus cases and one more death. The total infections stand at 3,149 and the death toll at 185. Movement restrictive measures and night curfew was imposed to a community in north-eastern Greece. Tests at new arrivals in Athens show just a few of “imported” cases.

11 of the new cases have been identified in the municipality of Echinos in north-eastern Greece, that has been placed under restrictive measures since last week. The increase of infections in Echinos has set health authorities again on alert, an emergency meeting is due and possibly also additional measures.

Also the latest victim, a 74-year-old man who died in a hospital in Alexandroupolis the early morning hours of Tuesday, was from Echinos. From the same area was the man who passed away on Monday. Echinos counts 15 deaths related to COVID-19.

Civil Protection and health authorities placed another area in north-eastern Greece under restrictive measures and night curfew on Tuesday due to increased coronavirus infections.. This time in Agiasma community in the Prefecture of Rodopi. Restrictions are valid until June 23, 2020.

55.1% of the total infected people are men.

Of the total cases, 698 are related to travel abroad and 1,786 were infected by already known cases.

12 patients are intubated in hospitals Intensive Care Units. Their average age is 71, among them are four women. 75% of them have underlying health issues or are over 70 years old.

A total of 117 patients have been discharged from intensive care units.

Among the 185 deceased were 56 women.

Average age of the deceased 76, the overwhelming majority, 95.6%,  had underlying health problem and/or were over 70 years old.

As the country opened its borders to tourists from abroad on June 15, health teams continue to conduct COVID-19 tests to new arrivals with locals to be concerned about so-called “imported” cases.

Apparently to reassure the Greek population, authorities leaked a report to media about positive test results after tests conducted at the international airport of Athens last week, between June 8 and June 14, 2020..

Only four tests were positive in tests conducted to 7,804 passengers who arrived in Greece with 104 flights from 19 countries.
