Police arrests woman for abduction of 10-year-old Markella

Greek Police announced on Thursday morning the arrest of woman as responsible for the abduction of a 10-year-old pupil Markella in Thessaloniki on June 11.

The 33-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday, while she was at a beach of the town of Katerini, some 120 km south of Thessaloniki.

The woman had shaved her red hair in order to alternate her appearance.

The clue that led to her was that after she released the abducted girl on Saturday, she called a taxi to take her to Katerini, where she already had rented a summer apartment.

Police came to the woman’s traces after they had evaluated surveillance cameras in the area where the girl was released.

The pupil had recognized the woman when police showed her some pictures during the investigation.

The abductor was at some point a neighbor of the girl’s family and was socializing with the mother.

The arrestee is to be brought to prosecutor later on Thursday.

According to media, the woman has not cooperated with police, so far, the motive for the abduction remains so far unknown. However, she has reportedly admitted that she took the girl and gave her drugs mixed in a drink. According to some media, the woman sexually abused the minor.

The girl remains hospitalized. Laboratory tests found psychotropic drugs, among others cocaine, in her blood.

The woman is reportedly divorced and her child lives with the father.

Markella was taken by the woman while she was walking from school to her home, some 200 meters away.
