Authorities closed traffic on both directions of the Athens – Lamia highway in the height of Martino on Friday afternoon due to a raging wildfire. Vehicles are being diverted by alternative routes to avoid the thick smoke that has covered the highway. The diversion takes place at the 125.7 km in Martino to 115 km in Castro.
The fire broke out in a land plot next to the highway in Marthino in the Prefecture on Fthiotida, central Greece, Friday noon.
Due to strong winds the blaze spread quickly and the fire front was moving towards the wind turbines, local media report.
Strong forces of the Fire Service are still struggling against the fire in early evening with over 64 firefighters, 17 fire trucks, 3 Canadair and 2 helicopters of the fire service.
According to latest information, the fire is still raging without control, flames had crossed the highway and are moving towards the village of Martino.
It seems to be the first big wildfire in the year. Wildfires and forest fires are a real Greek plague that destroys thousands of acres each summer.
