In an effort to identify more victims of the bogus doctor, Greek Police released on Monday the pictures of the man who was claiming to be a doctor specialized in the treatment of cancer. He was offering “alternative therapies” based on herbal oils and cannabis and was extracting thousands of euros from his victims or their families. Three of his victims, among two of them minors aged 14 and 16 and one 78-year-old man, allegedly passed away following his instructions.
The bogus doctor would take advantage of the desperation, the religious faith and the patriotism of patients with cancer or incurable diseases. He had manged that nuns and monks in a few monasteries in Attica, Pilion and Mount Athos were promoting his work describing to those seeking advise as a “highly religious person” and a “devoted Christian.”
In one monastery he had reportedly introduced himself as a “fighter jets pilot.” According to the legend he built around himself, he would “fly F-16 and Turkish pilots would immediately fly back to their air bases when they realized that the man was sitting at the cockpit.”
Using the name of “Nikolaos Kontos” he was claiming that he was a neurosurgeon and neuro-oncologist, specialized in children cancer. He claimed that he had studied in USA and Switzerland and that he was researcher in a famous research institute in the Alps country.
He had allegedly managed to persuade also other doctors of his abilities who would allow him to examine patients in their offices, some of them in diagnostic centers and clinics.
Police investigation was launched in last November when the parents of the two minors who passed away turned to a lawyer.
Police released his pictures and data after he was remanded into custody on Monday after he was taken to prosecutor to testify. According to media, he testified that he was “empirical botanist” and wanted to help the children. He claimed that they had concluded their conventional therapies when he met them.
He has been charged for murder, fraud, drug trafficking and counterfeiting the medical profession.
According to media reports, preliminary investigation located over 40 of his victims, after his arrest another 20. The phone of police reportedly did not stop ringing after his picture was published at Monday noon.
The man, who used the name “Nikolaos Kontos” during his bogus career, was arrested last Tuesday
According to Police, his real name is Nikolaos Kontostathis, 47 years old, born in Liosia suburb of western Athens.

ELAS is appealing for witnesses who may have fallen victim to one of his schemes or have knowledge of any crimes he may have committed to come forward.

According to media, the case file contain also the names of his wife, an Albanian national who would present herself a daughter of a well-known Greek shipowner. The couple has been living in a villa with swimming pool in Agia Marina, south-eastern Attica. They have two underage children.
Next to his wife, also the names of two doctors are in the case file. They are accused of complicity in fraud, as, according to the preliminary investigation, they knew that he was just a bogus doctor.
The three will be charged with misdemeanor offenses.
