Schools closed in Paramythia, West Greece, due to increased coronavirus infections

Health and local authorities in Thesprotia prefecture, Epirus, western Greece, went on alert on Monday due to an increase of confirmed coronavirus infections over the weekend. Kindergartens and elementary schools were closed in the town of Paramythia, while the Municipality of Igoumenitsa ordered contacts with the public only after appointments.

The number of infections in Paramythia of Souli Municipality reached 7 over the weekend.

Schools and kindergartens were ordered to remain closed on Monday in the town of 2700-residents, Paramythia, in a bid to contain a coronavirus outbreak that has so far infected at least seven people.

An experts team from the National Health Organization (EODY) was sent to Paramythia on Monday to investigate whether additional measures to contain the spread of the virus were needed and to conduct testing in the general population.

Another team is to conduct testing in 33 communities of Souli Municipality.

The first patient, a 52-year-old woman was tested positive late on Saturday, after she was admitted to the university hospital of Ioannina.

Health authorities started tracing and testing her close contacts. The results showed that positive to COVID-19 were also her 59-year-old sister, another 3 members of her family as well as 2 members of a friendly family.

Information about how the two sisters contracted the disease in the first place was not available.

The increase of infections has set on alert also local authorities in the broader area even if for different reasons. The mayor of Pogoni expressed his concern about the opening of the Kakavia border crossing with Albania on July 1.

A school was also closed in Xanthi, northeastern Greece, on Monday, after a pupil was tested positive on Sunday.

According to latest official information on Sunday, the total number of infections in Greece is 3,266 and of deaths 190. Some infections have been detected in travelers coming to the country from abroad.
