Greece’s Energy and Environment Ministry submitted a draft bill that obliges public and private buildings to install electric cars chargers in parking slots. Among others, the bill also foresees that owners of chargers can sell excess electric power to the market.
According to the draft based on European Union regulations, building construction based on permits dated after March 2021 will have to include wiring and chargers at each parking station.
For housing buildings with more than 10 parking spaces, the wiring for individual chargers is the minimal that must be installed during construction, whereas for buildings with mixed use (housing and offices), one charger per five parking spaces will suffice.
In constructions with building permits prior to March 1, 2021 several options are provided, including wiring and charger installation in a single parking space with expenses shouldered by the resident and after prior agreement with the building manager and the majority of the other apartment owners.
In current buildings undergoing restoration work, such installations will not be obligatory if the cost of wiring and charges exceeds 7% of the building’s total renovation cost.
Owners charging their car batteries at low-demand times (e.g. overnight) may sell excess electric power to the market.
The draft bill is currently on public consultation.
