Coronavirus in Greece: 41 new cases, 26 of them among tourists

Greece’s health authorities announced 41 new confirmed coronavirus cases with 26 of them detected among travelers to the country. According to the Health Ministry statement on Saturday evening, the total infections stand at 3,772 with the daily growth at 1.1%.

No new death has been recorded in the last five days and the death toll remains at 193.

The spike comes following news of at least “29 cases at Promachonas crossing with Bulgaria” earlier today that forced the Greek government to take drastic measures and demand a “negative” Covid-19 test by all tourists using the border with the neighboring country before they enter Greece.

11 of the new coronavirus confirmed cases have been detected at the entry points in Greece.

15 travellers voluntarily sought laboratories for Covid-19 test in the country after experiencing some symptoms. They were tested positive.

The majority of the remaining cases are located in northern Greece, Macedonia and Thrace. Specifically, the new cases are:

3 in Thessaloniki, 1 in Drama and 1 in Xanthi.

For third consecutive day, there is an increase of infections in Attica with 9 new cases again.

87 Serbs tourists in Evia left Saturday afternoon for their country, after 7 of them were tested positive to Covid-19. They were allowed to leave following talks between the authorities of the two countries. They left in charterred buses that were not allowed to stop while traveling through Greece.

According to the Health Ministry statement on Saturday, of 3,732 cases in total 54.6% affect men.

Of the total cases, 990 are related to travel abroad, 1,969 are related to an already known case. The rest are not related to travel or another known case or are still under investigation.

Average age of the infected in 49 with age range between 0 and 102.

9 patients are intubated in ICUs.. Their average age is 58 years old, among them are 3 women. 88.9% of the patients have underlying health issues or are over 70 years old.

122 patients have been discharged from the ICUs since the beginning of the outbreak.

Number of coronavirus-related deaths stands at 193.

Among the deceased were 62 women. The average age of the deceased was 76 with range age between 35 and 102.

95.9% had underlying health issues and/or were over 70 years old.

According to the Health Ministry on Saturday, a total of 371,167 tests have been conducted since beginning of the year, 5,934 (1.6%) are positive. The data include several tests conducted on a single patient, as well.

40,279 (10.9%) tests have been conducted among flight passengers since June 12, the EODY statement said, adding that 84 (0.2%) are positive.

In the last three days the new cases recorded were 50 on Thursday, 60 on Friday and 41 on Saturday with the majority of them to have been located among travellers who crossed into Greece via the Promachonas border-crossing with Bulgaria.

Greece decided that tourists via Promachonas have to show a “negative Covid-19 test” as of Tuesday, July 14, 2020.

At the same time, an increase among the locla population has been recorded in the last week, as well.

PS things start to get critical in Greece, when the daily infections are above 50, health experts have said.
