Coronavirus Greece: 2 more deaths and 36 new confirmed cases

Two more deaths and 36 new confirmed cases have increased the coronavirus fatalities to 197 and the total infections to 4048, Greece’s health authorities announced on Tuesday evening.

Among the new cases, 5 have been detected among tourists.

The rest of the new cases have been detected in several regions across Greece an indication that there is a widespread  spread of the infections. Majority of the new cases were detected in Attica, though.

Infections increased since the country opened its gates to tourists and large part of the local population stropped observing safety distance and other measures. The use of mask in supermarkets became mandatory again since Saturday, July 18.

The new 36 cases have been detected:

2  at the entry points in Greece.

3 more travellers voluntarily sought laboratories for Covid-19 test in the country after they developed some symptoms. They were tested positive.

The remaining new cases are:

17 in Attica

4 in Thessaloniki, 2 in Xanthi and 2 in Larissa.

Each one (1) in Viotia, Aitoloakarnania, Heraklio (Crete), Corinth, Pella and Samos.

One tourist from Poland has been tested positive at one of the country’s entry points. The pregnant woman is meanwhile on the island of Zakynthos.

According to the Health Ministry statement on Tuesday,  54.6% of the total of infections affect men.

Of the total coronavirus cases, 1,118 (27.6%)  are related to travel abroad, 2,059 (50.9%) are related to an already known case. The rest are not related to travel or another known case or are still under investigation.

Average age of the infected in 49 with age range between 0 and 102.

Number of intubated patients in ICUs has decreased to 10 after the latest deaths of one man and one woman.

The average age of the intubated patients is 58 years old, among them are 2 women. 80% of the intubated patients have underlying health issues or are over 70 years old.

124 patients have been discharged from the ICUs since the beginning of the outbreak.

Number of coronavirus-related deaths has reached 197.

Among the deceased were 64 women. The average age of the deceased was 76 with range age between 35 and 102.

95.9% had underlying health issues and/or were over 70 years old.


According to the Health Ministry on Tuesday, a total of 419,906 tests have been conducted since beginning of the year, 6,212 (1.5%) are positive. The data include several tests conducted on a single patient, as well.

46,893 (11.4%) tests have been conducted among flight passengers since June 12, the EODY statement said on Sunday, adding that 93 (0.2%) are positive.

This latest section of information has been removed from the daily report since Monday.

Head  of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias announced earlier on Tuesday the number of tests conducted at the Greek entry points and the number of “imported” cases for the time period July 1-19, 2020.
