One of Greece’s historical newspapers Ethnos Sunday Edition shuts down following the suspension of the daily newspaper a year ago. The last issue of the newspaper will be published on August 2.
Ethnos Sunday edition was selling 14,000-15,000 newspapers from 22,000 in the last years. Even with lower sales, it was one of the four biggest Sunday newspapers in Greece.
The newspaper was first published in 1913 with a political approach in favor of centrist PM Eleftherios Venizelos. Always in the progressive political spectrum, it supported later Georgios Papandreou and Center Union. In 1970, during the Greek military junta of 1967-74, it was forced to stop publishing. In 1981, Dimitris Varos relaunched it as a colour tabloid.
The newspaper was owned for years by Pegasus Publishing S.A.
It was sold in 2017 to Dimera Media Investments, owned by Ivan Savvidis, the Greek-Russian businessman.
Dimera reportedly acquired the two Ethnos titles (daily and Sunday) for 3 million euros.
Official announcements are expected in the next few days, even later today.
According to media information, there will be a “voluntary exit program” for the employees.
The website ethnos.gr will continue operation as usual, even though with cuts in personnel and salaries, notes daily efsyn.
