Coronavirus Greece: Another spike with 124 new cases, one more death

A new jump of confirmed coronavirus infections has been registered in Greece in the last 24 hours with 124 new cases had sent the total infections to 4,973. One more death raised the death toll to 210.

24 of the new cases have been detected among travellers.

The majority of new cases have been detected again in the urban centers in Attica and Thessaloniki. Many of the new cases are related to clusters like weddings and baptisms.

The latest victim is a 92-year-old man who was hospitalized in Athens.

With infections increasing on a daily basis, despite the new restrictions, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis appealed at Greeks’ highest virtue, the Philotimo which he described as “our national vaccine” against the coronavirus.

The Ro=1 said the country’s top epidemiologist, Infectious Diseases professor Sotiris Tsiodras said on Tuesday, meaning that one infected transmits the virus to another person.

The new 124 new cases on Monday have been detected:

15  at the entry points in Greece.

9 more travellers voluntarily sought laboratories for Covid-19 test in the country after they developed some symptoms. They were tested positive.

The remaining new cases are spread across in 16 regional units:

22 in Attica

22 in Thessaloniki: 4 of them are reportedly related to cluster in a urological clinic of Gennimatas hospital, 2 to the cluster in a tax office, 1 with the wedding 10 days ago and 6 to a family with known infection.

18 in Evros: all related to a wedding in Alexandroupolis

8 in Kavala, all related with the meat procession factory

8 in Larisa: 6 of them are doctors in two hospital who spend vacations in Halkidiki, 1 close contact to one of them.

6 in Magnisia: 4 of them related to cluster in a military camp and 1 to the wedding in Alexandroupolis

2 in Rhodes, also related to Alexandroupolis wedding

Each 2 in Imathia, Kozani and Halkidiki

Each 1 in Arkadia, Drama, Pieria, Kastoria, Corfu, Cyclades, Pella, Chania (Crete)

According to the Health Ministry statement on Wednesday,  the daily growth from Tuesday to Wednesday is again  2.6% like th eprevious 24 hours.

54.6% of the total of infected are men.

Of the total coronavirus cases, 1,349 (27.1%)  are related to travel abroad, 2,479 (49.8%) are related to an already known case. The rest are cases not related to travel or another known case or are still under investigation.

Average age of the infected in 49 with age range between 0 and 102.

The rolling average number of infections in the last 7 days is 93 from 42  last Wednesday, July 29.

Number of patients intubated in ICUs remains at 13. Among them are 3 women. Average age of the intubated patients is 70.

69.2% of intubated patients had underlying health issues and age over 70 years.

128 patients have been discharged from the ICUs since the beginning of the outbreak.

Number of coronavirus-related deaths has increased to 210.

Among the deceased were 67 women. The average age of the deceased was 76 with range age between 35 and 102.

95.7% had underlying health issues and/or were over 70 years old.

Tests

Total coronavirus tests since the beginning of the outbreak in February is 609.583. Of them 6,876 (1.13%) were positive.
