Corfu: Three young Brits questioned over speedboat death of British woman

Three young Britons are being questioned by police on the Ionian island of Corfu over the death of a 60-year-old British holidaymaker who was run over by a speedboat while she was swimming at Avlaki beach, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to local media corfupress, the suspects were taken in for questioning on the basis of reports from eyewitnesses who allegedly saw the incident take place on Monday morning.

The victim, 60-year-old Claire Glatman was reportedly hit by a speedboat pulling a water-skier while she was swimming at Avlaki around 10 o’ clock on Monday morning.

Glatman reportedly sustained sustaining extensive injuries to the lower extremities and most likely bled to death in the sea. Her body was recovered by a local speedboat professional and a coast guard vessel.

Eyewitnesses said that the speedboat left the accident scene immediately and disappeared.

The speed boat was found later abandoned at a beach of Agios Stefanos.

The three young suspects are also British tourists whose families have villas and holiday homes in the area.

The speed boat reportedly belongs to the family of one of the three suspects who was also driving it.

Glatman, a mother of four, was on vacation with her husband and one of her children.

In recent years she used to spend several months on Corfu as the family owned a home in Avlaki area.

She would go for a swim every morning.

Claire Glatman was  very dear to the British expat community of the island, as well as to the inhabitants of Sinia and Kassiopi with whom she maintained close social relations, reports corfupress.

Her family, her friends and the local community are in shock.

The autopsy is scheduled for today, Tuesday.
