Greece expects more steps from Turkey before “dialogue”, says PM Mitsotakis

“The return of Oruc Reis to Antalya is a positive first step. I really hope this first step be followed by others,” Greek prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Sunday during a press conference in the city of Thessaloniki, northern Greece.

“If there are steps towards this direction, Greece is ready to start a new cycle of exploratory contacts with Turkey,” he stressed.

Mitsotakis added that “Greece has strong alliances and dialogue is the only way. Dialogue in good faith is the main way to deal with the only problem we have, which is the delimitation of maritime zones.”

Regarding the new armaments program he announced on Saturday, Mitsotakis said the program was “ambitious, but within the country’s economic potential.”

Mitsotakis said that the approach is different as some significant investments are made, but it is recognized that the armed forces are above all the human resources and for this reason 15 thousand recruitment will be made in the following five years.

He said that the 18 French Rafale aircraft “will replace the older Mirage 2000” and the forecast is that the first aircraft will arrive in Greece in the middle of 2021.

He added that the procedure will be completed by the beginning of 2022 at the latest.
