“Red line is 12 nautical miles,” says Greek PM Mitsotakis

Greece is defending its national sovereignty and sovereign rights, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said stressing that the “red line” for the maritime activity of Turkish vessel in the Aegean Sea was the 12 nautical miles. A day earlier, his state minister Giorgos Gerapetritis shocked the country when he said on the same issue that the country’s territorial waters extend to 6 n.m.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels on Friday, Mitsotakis said that Greece has already announced a decision to extend its territorial waters in the Ionian Sea from 6 to 12 miles,” and it has also “completed agreements with Italy and Egypt for the definition of maritime zones where the country exercises sovereign rights.”

He noted that “it is also known Greece defends its sovereignty at sea and air where our national airspace is 10 miles and any violation of it is dealt with by the Armed Forces.”

He stressed that Greece “reserves the inalienable right to extend its territorial waters to 12 miles whenever and however it sees fit.”
