Police shoots at 20-year-old man during pursuit – Victim is brain dead

A 20-year-old man who was shot and injured by police officers in Argos, Peloponnese, is reportedly brain dead. Internal investigation against the two police officers launched.

The young man was transferred from a hospital in Argos to Thriasio hospital in Athens with a head wound around dawn on Wednesday.

According to a statement by Thriasio, the victim had a head wound from a gunshot and was intubated, He was immediately taken to surgery and remains in the neurosurgery clinic. “The young man is brain dead,” media reported.

The victim was reportedly arrested in the past for having an iron fist in his car trunk.

The incident occurred when OPKE Argolida police officers attempted to conduct a check on a passing vehicle. Note that OPKE are Teams for the Prevention and Suppression of Crime, an elite, heavily armed unit of the Hellenic Police.

Based on the statement issued by the Hellenic Police, the driver refused to stop for a check and “attempted to ram” police officers who were outside their vehicles. A chase ensued and his vehicle was cornered by patrol cars. The driver abandoned his car and tried to escape by climbing a fence.

At this point, it appears, according to the Hellenic Police announcement, that two police officers opened fire on him, resulting in his serious injury.

The incident began at 2 a.m. in the Pyrgela area of ​​Argos and the chase continued through Argos, Elliniko, the Airport, Statheika and Monastiraki and ended at a supermarket, where the 20-year-old was eventually shot and severely injured.

The officers claimed that “on his escape route, near the point where the initial stop signal was given” by them , an air pistol was located and seized, which will be sent to the Criminal Investigations Directorate for laboratory examination.”

A case is being filed against the arrested police officers for “violation of the weapons law and grievous bodily harm.”

Later on Wednesday, the victim was transferred to another hospital, the KAT also in Athens.
