The public prosecutor in Piraeus has asked for the arrest of the captain of container ship “Maersk Launceston” over charges that he caused a maritime accident through negligence and violated international rules on avoiding collision.
The container ship crashed into the stern of Greek Navy minesweeper Kallisto on Tuesday morning as it was exiting the port of Piraeus.
The minehunter suffered serious damage that “cannot be repaired” sources told media.
Two crew members were slightly injured.
Half broken apart, the Kallisto was towed to the naval base of Salamis.
The Polish captain has been being reportedly detained by the port authorities of Keratsini and is expected to be taken to prosecutor tomorrow, Thursday. The container ship is banned from sailing until repairs are completed.
Authorities continue investigation in to the causes of the accident.
