Greece’s Civil Protection announced on Thursday evening that three more regional units are classified as “high risk”, Tier 4, on the Covid-19 map of the country. Tough restrictions, a form of lockdown where many business and services operations will be suspended, will be imposed in the regional units of Thessaloniki, Larissa and Rodopi as of 06:00 am Friday, October 30, 2020.

The number of “high risk”/Alarm Level regional units increase to seven. The other four are Serres, Ioannina, Kozani and Kastoria.

Using a 7-day rolling average, the daily number of Covid cases has roughly tripled in the month of October.

At a life briefing on Thursday, head of Civil Protedction Nikos Hardalias, said that an exceptional epidemiological outbreak has been recently observed in the Regional Units of Thessaloniki, Larissa and Rodopi.

He said that the restrictions imposed in Alarm Level regional units will go into force from 06:00 am Friday.

Exceptions are for travel to/from these areas and for the land, sea and air connections, for practical reasons. The travel restrictions will go in force at 06:00 am Monday, November 2, 2020.

Hardalias said that the issue of travel for the units in Level 4 will be re-evaluated in the coming hours.

The decision to raise the level of alarm in Thessaloniki, Larissa and Rodopi is based on data, measurements and criteria related to the assessment of the situation of the last few days.

Current cases in the 3 regional units

  • Thessaloniki: 1,955 active cases, 4,399 close contacts, who are in isolation at home. Average age of infected 35.2 years.
  • Larissa: 343 active cases, 721 close contacts. Average age 37.
