Coronavirus cases in Greece surpass 40,000; currently 140 intubated

Coronavirus cases in Greece surpassed 40,000 on Sunday after 1,678 new cases were confirmed in the past 24 hours. In the same time, another 9 Covid-19 patients died. For third consecutive day, the number of intubations hit another negative record as there are currently 140 Covid patients who need the aid of an intubator in order to be able to breathe.

Total cases reached 40,929. Of them 20,805 cases were recorded alone in October alone.

Thessaloniki again topped the list with 449 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours. The rapid increase of infections there have brought the health care system at its edge. The Health Ministry is implementing an emergency plan in order to strengthen the Covid-19 clinics with ICU beds in the country’s second biggest city as well as in the neighboring regional unit of Halkidiki.

Thessaloniki is not the only area feeling the pressure of the pandemic in its public health care system.

In Ioannina, Epirus, there is a “race against time” to bring some 24 elderly of a care home to hospitals as the local general hospital is reportedly full. 5 of the 8 in total ICU beds are occupied, the union of public hospital personnel POEDIN said on Sunday. There are efforts to transfer them to facilities in neighboring regional units as some of them have reportedly developed serious symptoms. The elderly were tested positive, they were reportedly infected by one member of the personnel.

What is worrying is the daily increase of Covid-19 patients in need of intubation and the increasing rate of positive cases as resulted by the conducted tests.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Saturday, a series of new restrictions including closure of restaurants, bars and cafes, and placed several regions in partial lockdown for the period of one month. The measures go in force on 3. November 2020.

The Civil Protection listed which regions belong to “increased surveillance” and “high risk.” Here is the new map and where which measures will be implemented.
