Greece’s new negative coronavirus record: 34 people die in past 24 hours

A shocking new negative record in Greece: 34 Covid-19 patients died in the past 24 hours, health authorities announced on Saturday evening. The new confirmed coronavirus cases are 2,556 and the number of Covid-19 patients currently intubated has reached 207.

Health Ministry spokesman and professor for Epidemiology Hygiene Gkijas Majiorkinis said during the live briefing of Friday that the country’s health care system can afford up to 350″ Covid-19 patients in ICUs.

Total cases have reached 54,810 and death toll 749.

Current active cases are estimated at 23,000 with 80% to be of “unknown transmission source.”

80,000 virus carriers in Attica

Experts said that based on Attica’s sewage analysis 80,000 people are currently infected in the country’s most populated regional unit, home of over 4 million people.

Speaking to Skai TV, professor for Analytical Chemistry Nikos Thomaidis part of the scientific team monitoring the viral load in the sewage of Attica since the outbreak said that “it is increasing alarmingly.”

According to the latest data, there is currently a coronary transmission of about 1.5 – 2%, ie about 60,000 – 80,000 active infections in the community of 4.2 million people.

“Every day we take a sample from Psytallia, analyze the virus load and hand over the results to the Public Health Committee of the Ministry of Health,” Thomaidis said. He noted that in recent days the tests show that the viral load is consistently high and that “we are on the rise of the 2nd big wave” of the pandemic in the country.

He said that the team’s finding do not match with those of the infections announced by health authorities “because we take a sample and see how many carriers among the population we will approximately find, while EODY is purposefully checking for suspicious cases.”

Lockdown

The dramatic increase of infections, intubations and consequently deaths in the last 5 days forced the Greek government to impose a general lockdown as of Saturday, November 7, 2020, and for three weeks.
