Updates on night curfew in Greece in force on Friday, Nov 13

A nationwide night curfew from 9:00 pm until 5:00 am goes into force across Greece on Friday, November 13.  During the night curfew hours, citizens must restrict going out to the bare minimum which is: only for work (with a permit), for health emergencies and for pet walking. One cannot go out even to assist a person in need.

According to the decision of the Development Ministry published in the official gazette on Friday morning:

  • Supermarkets, mini markets, bakeries, butchers, fish shops, pharmacies and car repair shops will close at 8:30 pm.

Note that the Development Ministry said on Thursday that the new operation hours for supermarkets would go in effect on Monday, Nov 16.

Note also that pharmacies will keep operating when assigned to “night duty.”

Supermarkets and mini markets can operate with delivery only also from 8:30 pm until 1:00 a.m.

Kiosks can be open 24 hours.

Deliveries and Take Away are possible during the 9:00 pm-5:00 am curfew,  a statement by the Civil Protection said. However, it clarified that “take away” can not be a “self-content” reason to leave home.

More details on night curfew here.

Greece is currently under a nationwide lockdown that went into effect on November 7 and will remain effective through November 30.

During this time, citizens must either send an SMS message or have a printed or hand-written document citing the reasons for their outing every time they leave their homes. More details on leaving home “permits” here.

Regarding personal exercise, this is restricted to a maximum of three people at a time and in close proximity to their homes; it does not cover athletic training at a professional club level.

As of Friday all public and private sector organisations and businesses must be able to provide documentation showing that they operate a skeleton staff only and have assigned the majority of their employees to work from home. The minister also recommended that TV stations reduce staff and guests to a minimum at studios at any given time.

Hobby hunting and fishing are prohibited.

KTG has understood that swimming is only possible within the municipality of the citizen’s residence.

Government officials like the government spokesman implied on Thursday that the lockdown may be extended and restrictions may also toughen if the measures do not bring the expected results.

Media including state broadcaster ERT report of the possibility of a lockdown like in spring and this will include the closure of elementary schools and of more business activities in order to limit the number of people moving around.  This could be announced later on Friday during the weekly live briefing at 6 pm.

On Thursday, coronavirus daily cases broke a triple records with 50 deaths in 24 hours, 3316 new infections and 310 people in intubation.
