Live briefing

Health experts warn that increase in Covid-19 cases between ages 40 to 64 is a key concern.

Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias warned that despite the five weeks of lockdown, infections in several regions do not decrease.

Ten regions stand with high epidemiological load as the new cases remain increased on daily basis, he said. These 10 regions are:

  • Pieria, Drama, Kilkis, Pella, Xanthi, Imathis, Thessaloniki, Florina, and Larissa, while the situation in western Attica is “worrying.”

Minister Kikilias reiterated that the health care system remains under pressure. ICU capacity is full at 77% in Attica and 5% in Thessaloniki.

He warned about the risk of the virus spread over the Christmas holidays “if we do not observe the measures.”

Addressing the citizens he asked: “Are we aware that there are 578 intubated patients? The mobility has shown a small increasing trend despite the lockdown. The question is simple and tough: where does one hospitalize his co-citiens, where to find an ICU bed if things get difficult?”

Of course, it is up to the Health Minister to answer these questions, especially when the government is preparing to open some sectors of the economy before Christmas,  the lockdown is not a full lockdown but a relaxed one as large parts of the economy were not shut down and when the same government disregarded the signs of the 2. wave in mid-October the latest.

“We were prepared yet caught by surprise,” PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis dared say in an interview on Monday.
