The Bishop of Kastoria, Seraphim, died early Tuesday morning following complications caused by Covid-19. The 61-year-old Bishop was intubated for the last nine days. He is the second high-ranking clergy in Greece to die of the coronavirus.
Seraphim was tested positive in early December. He health deteriorated and was admitted to the Military Hospital in Thessaloniki, northern Greece. He was intubated on December 20.
Several high-ranking members of the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church and also average priests have contracted the coronavirus, especially in the last few months.
The 62-year-old Bishop of Lagadas, Ioannis, died in mid-November.
The 82-year-old Archbishop of Athens and whole Greece, Ieronymos, was hospitalized for almost two weeks in November.
The funeral for Bishop Seraphim is scheduled to take place in Kastoria on December 30
