A fireman lost his life on duty on Monday, while he was participating in a mission to evacuate children from a kindergarten trapped by the floods in a village of Alexandroupolis in north-eastern Greece.
The 46-year-old firefighter was drowned when the fire truck was swept away by rushing waters. Media reported that he attempted to open the door to jump out. The father of three was also the driver of the truck.
His colleagues could only recover the body that was swept away several meters away.
The tragedy took place in the village Apalos in the municipality of Alexandroupolis.
Shocked and in mourning, the firefighters concluded the evacuation of 21 children from the flooded kindergarten.
According to local media, it is the second time within a few days that the facility is flooded.
The area has been hit by heavy rainfalls.
Meanwhile, the Greek Fire Service has announced the launch of an internal investigation on the death of the firefighter.
