Gov’t spokesman Tarantilis resigns less than 2 months from appointment

Government spokesman and Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Christos Tarantilis announced his resignation  Sunday noon. According to a letter he submitted to Prime Minister, he said that he resigns for “family reasons.” He said further that he will continue his work as a member of New Democracy parliamentary group.

The Prime Minister’s office announced that alternate government spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni will act as government spokesperson.

Opposition was quick to jump into the issue claiming that Tarantilis resigned because he disagreed with the communications strategy regarding the former artistic director of the National Theater and Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

In a statement, main opposition party SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance said that “Tarantilis made the start, now it’s time for Mendoni to follow.”

Tarantilis issued a statement insisting that his resignation is due to “family” and not “political reasons.”

He was appointed after the cabinet reshuffle beginning of January.
