Greek authorities seized 5.3 tons of meat unsuitable for human consumption at a facility in the northern suburbs of Athens. The company has been supplying restaurants and hotels on the islands
The products were to be placed on the market by a company operating in the northern suburbs of Athens, state broadcaster ERT reported.
The case began with a complaint about a case of food-borne illness in a restaurant business in Penteli village also in northern Athens.
Through the process of tracing the raw materials, a large meat processing and trading facility in the Northern Sector of Athens was identified, which had supplied the restaurant with the suspicious materials.
During the subsequent inspections of this facility, serious violations were found regarding food safety, product traceability, storage and freezing conditions, as well as compliance with the required control systems.
As a result, more than 5.3 tons of animal products were seized, which were deemed unfit for human consumption.
The Piraeus Veterinary Service further seized approximately 300 kilograms of animal products, while the data collected revealed that the company supplied both island areas and hotel units. At the same time, in the context of the cooperation of the competent authorities and the immediate activation of the tracing mechanisms, an additional 500 kilograms of products related to the specific case were seized on the island of Chios in eastern Aegean Sea.
Following the findings of the inspections, the Attica Region recommended to Greek Food Authority EFET the suspension of the company’s operations.
It’s not the first time and not the last one, where meat unsuitable for consumption is being pushed into the market and consumed by unaware citizens. Only permanent and strict controls with heavy fines including closure of these companies and complaints by those affected with unpleasant symptoms can save us..
Young friends had been throwing up for 3 days after they had bought meat pieces to grill on Easter day in April. Unfortunately, they did not file a complaint.
