Pilgrimage to Mount Athos banned until mid-April due to outbreak

The deputy governor of the Mount Athos monastic community in northern Greece, Aristos Kasmiroglou, has extended a suspension of pilgrimages to the peninsula until April 15, the foreign ministry announced on Wednesday.

Additionally, anyone wishing to enter the all-male community must undergo precautionary checks at the ports of entry.

On Tuesday, health authorities confirmed 20 new infections in the community, a day later, state broadcaster ERT reported that over 40 monks were infected with Covid-19.

One of the monks was intubated in a hospital in Thessaloniki.

According to media reports the infected monks live isolated in sketes and not in monasteries.

Worth noting that health organization teams were in the Monks’ Republic some ten days ago to inoculate those wanting to have a vaccination.
