Greece’s health authorities announced on Wednesday evening 3015 new coronavirus cases and 86 more deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of intubated patients decreased to 831 even though this number does not say much as hospitalizations reached a new high with 551 in the last 24 hours.
Death toll has reached 9,713. Total confirmed infections since the begin of the pandemic 323,639.
Despite the high numbers of infections, deaths and intubations, The government is determined to open the country to tourism on May 14 and in this sense inter-regional travel restrictions remain in force also over the Easter holidays.
However, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Wednesday a roadmap for the gradual lifting of lockdown that will start right after Easter, on May 2. More details here.
At the live briefing on Wednesday, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said that the online platform for the vaccination of age group 30-39 will open next Tuesday, April 27. General Secretary for Primary Health Care Marios Themistokleous said that this age group will be inoculated with AstraZeneca.
Those aged 40-49 will be vaccinated later, in May.
Kikilias said further that vaccinations with Johnson & Johnson will start in May.
He added that there are currently 981 Covid-19 ICU beds across the country and that the overwhelming majority of intubated patients are not inoculated.
There is a descending trend, the Minister said, however at the same time, he announced that the contracts of private doctors who were recruited for the public hospitals will be extended for 20 more days. Kikilias added that they were looking to recruit more doctors.
