Greece: 1,381 new coronavirus cases, 23 deaths, intubations slightly increased

Greece’s health authorities announced on Wednesday evening 1,381 new coronavirus cases and 23 Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients slightly increased to 486.

Daily infections and deaths are constantly decreasing.

Among the intubated patients is a 65-year-old Russian tourist who arrived in the country with a negative PCR test  as travel restrictions provide. The man arrived on May 29 and fell ill with serious covid-19 symptoms. He was intubated on June 1 the day he sought medical help in Thessaloniki.

At the live briefing on Wednesday, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said the increasing number of inoculated citizens bring herd immunity closer.

Health experts estimate that a herd immunity of some 70% is expected to be achieved around September.

Kikilias said that 35.51% of the population has vaccinated with at least one dose, while 2,137,000 citizens (20.39%) have been fully vaccinated.

He said that vaccinationson the islands is increasing and “there are islands where vaccinations for appointment have reached 100%.”

Islands with a record number in appointments are: Lefkada, Thassos, Paros, Mykonos and Salamina, the minister said.

Generally speaking the rate of vaccinations on the island has increased to 40$ from 22% a few days ago, he added.
