Four people have been injured in Zografou suburb of Athens after a man began to randomly attack passersby with a knife on Wednesday morning.
None of the injuries in the hand and legs are considered to be serious. Among the injured is a 17-year-old boy, the owner of a bakery and two passersby. They have been transferred to nearby hospitals.
According to preliminary media reports, the attacker was arrested shortly after he ran amok in the streets of the residential suburb at around 9.30 a.m.
After the attacks he reportedly ran back into his home and called the police, admitted to the attacks and threatened to commit suicide before he was taken into custody.
The 54-year-old man has a history of mental illness, state-run news agency amna reported.
He is said to have injured himself after he returned home.
State broadcaster ERT reported that he was hospitalized in a public psychiatric clinic in Athens but he escaped in December 2020.
