Greece: 2,696 coronavirus cases, 9 deaths, intubations up; geo distribution

Greece’s health authorities announced on Thursday 2,696 new coronavirus cases and 9 Covid-related deaths in the past 24 hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals Intensive Care Units increased to 157, an increase of 27 patients in a week.

PCR and Rapid tests in the past 24 hours hit a record of 102,034 tests.

At the Live Briefing on Thursday, health experts warned of the increased epidemiological load observed on islands that are favorite touristic destinations. the load across the country appears stabilized, however, with a positivity rate at 3.26% which is considered as high.at high levels

Member of the Epidemiologists’ Committee and professor for Children Epidemiology Vana Papaevangelou drew attention on the situation on the islands and said that on Paros the positivity rate is 5.5%, on Mykonos 4.27%, on Tinos 4.2% and 3.76 in Rethymno, Crete.

The rate of infected tourists is very low, below 1%, she added.

The median age of the new infections remains low at 25 years old. She note, though, that the infections rate among people aged below 39 has decreased.

Papaevangelou noted also that there is a big increase of new infections in Thessaloniki.

She stressed that due to the vaccinations there are much fewer hospital admissions, much fewer in ICUs and deaths when compared the current epidemiological load with previous  one before the vaccines.

“99% of those hospitalized were unvaccinated or had only vaccine dose” the professor underlined adding that 10% of the unvaccinated will need hospitalization.

She added that based on track and tracing data, the main reason for infections among the youth are meetings and night entertainment, while for the older age groups are the work and family meetings.

Head of Civil Protection Nikos announced the weekly update of the Covid-MAP where some regions were placed in higher risk level and a few ones in lower. He warned residents and visitors of the islands of Mykonos and Ios that restrictions will be imposed. He warned also another 4 islands and some touristic destinations on Crete. Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed 487,709 infections (daily change: +0.6%). In the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 120 infections are related to travel abroad and 1577 to other confirmed cases.

There are 9 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, the total of pandemic victims to 12,935.  Of these, 95.1% had an underlying condition and/or were 70 years old.

A total of 157 Covid-patients – from 144 a day earlier – are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 65 years. 61.8% are men. 82.8% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or more.

2,802 patients have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.

173 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change: -11.73%). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 167.

The median age of new infections is 41 years (range: 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of the deceased is 78 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).
