Greece: 3,605 coronavirus cases, 20 deaths, 240 intubations; distribution

Greece’s health authorities announced on Thursday 3,605 coronavirus cases and 20 Covid-related deaths in the last 24hours. The number of intubated Covid-patients in hospitals Intensive Care Units increased further to 240.

Authorities on Thursday extended the mini lockdown in Chania and on Zakynthos until August 18 , 2021.

After a long break due to the fires in the country, the live briefing resumed on Thursday.

Medical Professor at Patras University nad member of the Epidemiologists’ Committee Chalarambos Gogos spoke of the spread of the Delta variant of the Covid-19.

He said that the pandemic continues to be a disease of the youth with the average age of infected to be 29. However, he stressed that now it affects also older generations.

“The Delta variant prevails and it can possibly reach 90%,” Gogos stressed.

He urged the youth to get tested before leaving for summer vacations as well as upon their return, especially when there vulnerable persons in their environment.

The reiterated the need to observe protection measures, the correct use of mask and the need of vaccinations.

“99% of the patients in ICUs are not vaccinated,” he noted.

Referring to the island of Crete that recorded 506 new infections in the last 24 hours, Gogos stressed that there is “further increasing trend in the last days. This is confirmed also by the positivity rate, that, however, is still below the mark of 4%.”

He noted that the majority of Regional Units have positivity rate 3 and some 4 and added that the trend is slightly increasing.

“Imported” infections due to tourism remain very low, Gogos added.

Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed 528,474 infections (daily change: +0.7%). In the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 130 infections are related to travel abroad and 2533 to other confirmed cases.

51.2% of the infected are men.

There are 20 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, the total of pandemic victims to 13,158.  Of these, 95.1% had an underlying condition and/or were 70 years old.

A total of 240 Covid-patients – from 226 a day earlier – are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 65 years. 63.3% are men. 84.6% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or more.

According to EODY, intubated Covid-patients based on age group are:

  • 0-17 : 1 (a 17-day-old newborn)
  • 18-39: 14
  • 40-64: 105
  • 65+  : 120

2,863 patients have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.

200 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change: -18.7%). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 213.

The median age of new infections is 40 years (range: 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of the deceased is 78 (range: 0.2 to 106 years).
