One worker at the Urban Train ISAP died and two workers were injured when the maintenance wagon collided with a train early morning Tuesday. Due to a breaks failure the rail grinder was reportedly running on the track with a speed of over 50 km per hour.
The workers were injured after the brakes of the rail grinder they were operating failed and it went careering down the track until it collided with an empty train that had been parked at Agios Nikolaos station to act as a buffer.
Two workers managed to jump from on the rail grinder escaping death. The third worker, a 41-year-old man, died later in the hospital.
The operation of Metro line 1 from Kifissia to Piraeus has been disrupted due to the accident, trains are operating only Omonia-Piraeus and Ano Patisdia-Kifossia. Passengers with destination the stations in between are being transported with buses.
STASY expressed its sorrow for the loss of the employee while an investigation has been launched into the exact causes of the accident.
