Greece to pay €127 million to EU over poor plastic recycling record

Greece will have to pay around 127 million euros to the European Union this year due to its low performance in recycling plastic packaging.

The fine is aimed at increasing the recycling of plastics across the EU.

According to a study on the role of plastics in the circular economy of Greece, prepared by think tank IOBE on behalf of the Association of Hellenic Plastics Industries (SVPE), about 43,000 tons of plastic packaging is neither buried nor recycled each year.

  1. Greece’s recycling format is shocking, I live on Crete and there’s nowhere near sufficient bins for recycling plastic or glass or collections, way behind the times in this very important aspect of helping clean up the country and oceans, they need to up their game big time and stop fly tipping too, people on government jobs need to start doing their jobs properly, instead of sitting about smoking, which i have seen a awful lot of, some of their attitudes towards things are terrible!!!

  2. It’s not only the recycling itself.

We, my wife and I, are going to clean beaches, streets, ditches with two local environmental groups weekend after weekend here on Zante. Every weekend, with ten people, we collect at least 30 to 40 120 l garbage bags – not speak of all the rubbish and garbage that is dumped „wild“. We have here on Zante enough recyclebins standing around – but the people need to make use of it – and correct use of it. I don’t know how many times I see people dumping everything in it – but not recyclable materials!!!!!

When you see people throwing half full juice drinks out of the windows of their cars, dropping plastic bottles everywhere they go, even putting garbage into a plastic bag and throwing this out of a car window into a nearby field – what do you expect?

The only thing that would help is a deposit on every canister, regardless if it is water bottles, beer or soda cans. Even put 1€ on every plastic fredo cup – why we are still using these instead of paper cups?

    It’s ridiculous!!!!!!!!

  3. Greece is only 10 million people, are you sure this is about recycling?
