The Greek embassy in Kiev is being evacuated, the Foreign Ministry in Athens announced on Friday citing “rapid deterioration of the security situation” in the Ukrainian capital.
In a statement issued on Friday afternoon, the Foreign Ministry said that the Ambassador of Greece in Ukraine requested and received approval to leave Kiev immediately.
Evacuation of embassy staff, as well as Greek citizens who wish to leave, will take place by road.
Until further notice the Consulates General in Mariupol and Odessa remain in operation.
Those in charge in the Consulates will decide the risk degree locally, the Foreign Ministry said.
Correspondents of state broadcaster ERT say now that they were told by the embassy personnel to leave Kiev.
They report of thousands of people trying to leave the city per car, on foot or hitch-hiking and endless traffic jam.
Friday afternoon, the last battle in Kiev between Russian and Ukrainian troops is on the making.
