Α foreign tourist was found dead in the caves of famous Matala in south Crete on Friday afternoon. The man was found unconscious and local called the ambulance that sought the assistance of the Fire Service as the body was laying on a difficult to access area.
When the rescuers reached the spot, they found out that the man was already dead.
Citing eyewitnesses, local media cretalive.gr reports that the tourist had fallen from a high height and ended up on the rocks.
Cretapost.gr reports that eyewitnesses who were at the beach at that time, said they were shocked to see the man falling.
Nobody could say whether it was an accident or a suicide.
The circumstances that led to the man’s fall and consequently his death are being investigated by Greek police.
An autopsy is to determine the causes of the man’s death.
Authorities reportedly do not rule out pathological causes as the body did not had any injuries despite the fall.
According to TV channels, the man was an Austrian national on holiday in Crete, his age is given as 24 or 30 years old.
He had reportedly arrived to Heraklio with a couple of friends, however, he took the bus alone to visit the famous Matala caves.
